Mathematics Tutor for Oxbridge Applications
Description
MATHEMATICS TUTOR FOR OXBRIDGE APPLICATIONS:
The time of year has come when thousands of talented and determined students plan to submit their applications to read Mathematics at one of the best Universities in the world. Whilst the idea of reading Mathematics at an Oxbridge college is an exciting one, there is one thing standing between the student and his or her dream: the Oxbridge Interview. Many natural questions arise almost immediately:
(a) Should I choose Oxford over Cambridge?
(b) To which college(s) should I apply?
(c) How can I prepare for "that for which I cannot prepare"?
(d) What is the "right" material I should cover, so that my head can be seen above those of the competition?
My name is Mark, and my aim is to help talented students (by answering the above questions) find their way into the Oxbridge college that will help secure their futures. I myself have studied at Trinity College Cambridge and have both studied for a PhD and have taught at the University of Oxford. I also have extensive teaching experience in Paris and New York City.
I offer my services to train students not only in the art of the Oxbridge Interview, but also in the practice of “good mathematical thinking”. See Section II below for an idea of what I can offer you in the run up to the Interview season.
I. ABOUT ME:
I am a recent University of Oxford Mathematics PhD graduate (November 2013). Before this, I studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. Since having left Oxford, I have taught and done research at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (2013-2014) and New York University in New York City (2014-2016).
I was born and raised in Glasgow, and was educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School. I achieved 7 A band 1 grades in the Higher Examination diet (2004); this was the best performance by a student in Scotland that year. In the following year, I was placed among the top 5 candidates in the United Kingdom for my performance in A-Level Mathematics and A-Level Further Mathematics.
II. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM OUR TUTORING SESSIONS:
I place an emphasis on having, at the first iteration, a solid and goal-based plan which is created with each individual student's perceived strengths and weaknesses in mind. However, it is also important to keep in mind that creativity of thought and originality is what many interviewers seek in a student: as such, I am also looking for the student to surprise and challenge me during our sessions!
From an organisational point of view, you can expect the following on the road to your Oxbridge interview:
(i) One-on-one tutoring sessions (for 1-2 hours at a time) aimed at testing the student's mental agility and understanding of standard school curriculum material;
(ii) Weekly problem sheets, written with the student in mind, which will identify and strengthen areas of weakness;
(iii) Introduction of advanced mathematical material, which tests the originality and creativity of the student's thought-processes;
(iv) Bespoke examination papers and performance review, which aim at gauging the student's progress every few weeks;
(v) Mock interviews, designed to gradually accustomise the student to the Oxbridge Interview style.
After our first session, a plan tailored to the student will be drawn up. The Oxbridge Interview process may seem mysterious and difficult, but with careful preparation and plenty of practice, your chances of success are dramatically improved!
While mathematical talent is essential to any successful student, it is also key that he or she is able to clearly communicate his or her ideas to an audience (in this case, an interviewer!). Much of the support provided by me will place an emphasis on the student's clear articulation of ideas and solutions to problems.
III. RATES FOR TUTORING:
This will be discussed during a preliminary phone consultation. Please contact me by e-mail to arrange a suitable time for such a call.
IV. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
There will be no need for you to purchase additional textbooks or reading material: all workbooks, examinations and homework sheets are written and provided by me.
Certification of my Qualifications is available upon request.
